The City of Chicago is launching a new initiative to develop the 2012 Chicago Cultural Plan. The plan will create an outline for Chicago’s future cultural and economic growth as the centerpiece for the City’s goal to become a global destination for creativity, innovation, and excellence in the arts. The Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events is seeking input from Chicago’s citizens, cultural organizations, and city and community groups regarding the direction of our arts, cultural and creative industries as it affects them and their quality of life.

Public engagement will play a key role; Chicagoans from all walks will be actively involved in shaping the plan and can submit their ideas through social media, town hall meetings and public forums. Town Hall meetings will be held in four locations beginning February 15 and continuing on February 16, 18, and 21. The following dates include the location and time of each town hall:

Wednesday, February 15:  Columbia College from 6–8 p.m.
Thursday, February 16:  Nicholas Senn High School from 6–8 p.m.
Saturday, February 18:  DuSable Museum from 10–12 p.m.
Tuesday, February 21:  National Museum of Mexican Art, 6–8 p.m.

To further the conversation and to allow an even greater role, the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events has launched an interactive website, where Chicagoans can submit ideas and participate in the discussion. Additionally, neighborhood meetings will be held throughout the city this spring; details including time and place will be announced at a later date. The final plan will be unveiled in the fall.

Get to know your creative peers — sponsored by C3 (Chicago Creative Coalition) — at their monthly networking dinners where there are no agendas, no sales pitches, no boring speeches  and — ta da — no dues!  They call them Creatives and Networking Dining Occasions, or for short, CanDo Dinners.  Compare notes on who’s working, who isn’t, who has ideas and who knows whom. In these challenging times, you can’t be too connected.

Easy ground rules: attendees should be in creative fields, and do not have to be C3 members.  Everyone buys their own food and drink (minimum of $15) to keep the restaurants happy. RSVPs are necessary. Bring plenty of business cards.
