CHICAGO CRAFT
MAFIA PRESENTS: HAND MAY-ED
Whether your mama
is rebellious and rowdy or sweet and sincere, you've got to
get her a present for Mother's Day. If flowers, candies, and
dime-store doo-dads are as boring to you as they are to her,
then the Chicago Craft Mafia and Zola Jones have your solution.
Join the 8 members
of the Chicago Craft Mafia and Jason Loper of Zola Jones for
a collaborative sale at his boutique (1944 W. Montrose, 773/275-1845)
on Saturday May 3rd from 11am to 5pm for the first Hand May-ed.
This unique shopping experience combines the independently
designed goods that will make your mom feel original with
high-quality design and construction that will let her enjoy
your thoughtfulness for a long time to come.
"What mother
wouldn't love getting something that is beautiful and unique?,"
asks Leah Bohannon of Red
Glow 1500. "I mean, every mother is different, right?
Why not emphasize how she stands out from the pack by giving
her something that isn't mass-produced?"
The
Chicago Craft Mafia is part of the greater Craft
Mafia, started by 9 business owners in Austin, TX and
started in 2004. These local business owners joined forces
to not only support and grow their own businesses, but to
grow a larger community of independently run businesses that
make quality goods.
"We're here
running our businesses and promoting a quality DIY aesthetic,
and we wouldn't be here without our mothers," said Tammy
Terwelp of Smashing
Cars Creations. "Both our own biological mothers
and our mothers in craft who used their skills to create beauty
and function in items used everyday. Teaming up with Zola
Jones for this show helps us continue that tradition."
Zola Jones sells
one-of-a-kind bags and accessories from his boutique in Ravenswood.
His bags utilize recycled seat belts and buckles from salvage
yards and are constructed of materials that focus on durability
and with daily wear in mind.
"I design
my bags with a very Midwestern sensibility," said Loper.
"My fabric choice, materials choice, and durable construction
create a bag that will last even the roughest, toughest mother
a long, long time."
